Find Data

Statistical data can provide the basis for effective, evidence-based planning and program development, and can serve as a powerful tool for advocacy and building the case for change.
The First Nations Statistical Institute (FNSI) has created a collection of First Nation-specific information and statistics relating to the social and economic conditions of First Nations people and communities. The information is compiled from a variety of sources, including Statistics Canada, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) and others . The portal is maintained and updated regularly by FNSI.
In addition to these on-line tools, FNSI can work with your community or organization to define statistical needs, locate appropriate data sources, and access relevant statistical data.
This easy-to-use guide explains how statistical concepts are defined and how they are used. In particular, the guide is an excellent resource for understanding many of the unique challenges faced by users of First Nations statistics, including data gaps and coverage issues. Importantly, this guide also leads you to the data tables you need, organized by themes: Economic statistics (labour force, fiscal, economic development), Social statistics (housing, health, language, education, justice), and Demographic statistics (population growth, population projections, vital statistics). The guide is constantly being updated so check back often.
Explore the First Nation/Aboriginal Data Inventory, a listing of over 200 data sources currently held by 20 different federal departments. Search by federal department or topic, and then view the full record which includes a description of the data holding, available years, population covered, and contact name at the federal department responsible for the data holding.
